I first met Heather a couple years ago when I photographed her sister’s Destin wedding at Surfside Beach Resort. They were all so much fun and I was absolutely THRILLED when Heather emailed me about shooting her own wedding. Heather and Roland chose the Palazzo Del Sol in Destin as their ceremony, well, out on the beach behind the gorgeous beach house, and reception venue. The venue has a gorgeous back lawn that leads right to the beach, so it was absolutely perfect!
“I fell in love with my dress the first time I went looking. It was simple enough for me and the beach, but not too simple. It made me feel like a bride. I don’t wear a lot of jewelry, so my earrings (along with my wedding rings) were the perfect addition. I also had an anklet, given to me by one of my bridesmaids for my “something blue” I loved it all.” ~ Heather
What are some of your favorite memories from your wedding day?
Heather: “Some of my favorite memories from my wedding day are getting ready with all of my bridesmaids and my mom. Also, our first look. I was so anxious all day long but as soon as I saw him, nothing else mattered.”
Roland: “Holding Heather’s hand, looking into her eyes, and seeing her in her dress for the first time. Also, Erika and Ben’s toasts.”
“We wanted our ceremony to be a little more personal. Our officiant was a close friend and was there at the start of our relationship. Our vows were short and sweet, like we wanted but also just enough. It was perfect.”
What is something that happened on your wedding day that you didn’t expect?
Heather: Nothing in particular but my Aunt Gwen did tell me later that as I arrived at the altar, a single bird flew overhead. Made me think of my dad, so that was cool to hear.
Roland: The rain held off. We’ve never checked the weather so much.
“All of these girls are my best friends and have been there since the beginning of mine and Roland’s relationship. One is my older sister, Erika, so that was an easy choice. Actually, choosing all of them was pretty easy for me. Wouldn’t have been the same without them!” ~ Heather
“I’ve known all of these guys for a number of years. We’ve been through some of the best and absolute worst times together. So I wanted them by my side.” ~ Roland
What are some of the sweetest memories from your wedding day?
Heather: My cousin Aimee coming into the bridal suite before the wedding, we hugged for about 5 minutes straight. I wasn’t expecting her, so that was really sweet. Our first look, again. Having my Uncle Neal walk me down the aisle, our first dance, and Roland dancing with his mom. My sister’s speech too! There’s too many to choose from!
Roland: The “words of wisdom” I got from my grandma and Heather’s Mamaw. Our first look, dancing with my wife… like Heather said, there’s too many.
Advice for future brides:
“Don’t sweat the small stuff.” I can’t tell you how many times I heard that. It’s hard, but try. When I finally stopped worrying about everything, it was perfect.
Advice for future grooms:
Relax, enjoy the day. Have some drinks (but not too many) with your buddies; it’s your day too.
“Palazzo Del Sol was the perfect venue for what we wanted. Everything outside; ceremony on the beach and the reception in the lawn. We were able to have everything at this same venue; rehearsal dinner, ceremony, and the reception. We also had a few of the wedding party staying with us. Everything about it was perfect for us and we loved it.”
How freaking great is this dessert table?! All their family made their favorite desserts for everyone to enjoy. Each one was labeled with a card of who made it and what it was. “Aunt Babe’s Coca-Cola Cake… Mawmaw’s Applesauce Cake, etc”… Such a cute idea!!!
“We had our first dance to Tennessee Whiskey by Chris Stapleton. We heard this song for the first time when we went on a trip together to Tennessee. It just made sense for us that it would be our first dance. It always brings back good memories.”
What are some of your funniest memories?
Heather: Goldfish is my favorite snack and Meghan, one of my bridesmaids surprised me, pulled some out of her pocket and fed me on the dance floor. Roland likes to say he doesn’t dance but he did a pretty damn good job all night, so that was fun! I’ve seen some pretty funny pictures too.
Roland: Emmeline kicking the glass my WIFE dropped because she thought it was ice. She’s ok, so it’s funny.
Thanks goes out to…
“EVERYONE! We seriously can’t thank everyone enough, especially our badass photographers, Erika and Tim. Our coordinator, Nicki, our DJ, Dan, literally everyone did an amazing job and we couldn’t have imagined anything better. Our friends and family that made our wedding day more than perfect, THANK YOU!!”
